Who is Eligible for Coverage?
Immigrants in the following groups are eligible for health insurance coverage through the BeWell marketplace.
- U.S. citizens – A U.S. citizen is someone who was born in the U.S. or U.S. territories (except for American Samoa). Or someone who was born outside the U.S. and:
- Became naturalized as a U.S. citizen
- Became a U.S. citizen through the naturalization of his or her parent(s)
- Became a U.S. citizen through adoption by U.S. citizen parent, if certain conditions are met
- Acquired citizenship at birth because he or she was born to U.S. citizen parent(s)
- Became a U.S. citizen by operation of law
- U.S. nationals – A U.S. national is someone who’s a U.S. citizen or owes permanent allegiance to the U.S. In nearly all cases, non-citizen U.S. nationals are people born in American Samoa or abroad with one or more American Samoan parents under certain conditions.
- Lawfully present immigrants – The term “lawfully present” includes immigrants who have:
- “Qualified non-citizen” immigration status without a waiting period
- Humanitarian status or circumstances, including
- Temporary protected status
- Special juvenile status
- Asylum applicants
- Convention Against Torture status
- Victims of trafficking
- Valid non-immigrant visa
- Deferred action status (note: individuals are ineligible for advance premium tax credits if granted deferred action under the DACA program)
- Legal status conferred by other laws (including temporary resident status, LIFE Act individuals, Family Unity individuals)
Who is Not Eligible for Coverage?
Undocumented immigrants are not eligible to buy Marketplace health insurance coverage through BeWell. However, they may apply for coverage on behalf of documented individuals in their household.
